The Kids Winter Olympics

Amy and Josh wanted to play winter Olympics.

Amy and Josh were outside. They did not know what to do. Amy and Josh wanted to play winter Olympics. No one else had come out. When they were about to go home too, Amy spoke up.

“Maybe we can play something like hockey,” she said. “We both have hockey sticks and I have a puck. I bet we can go over to the frozen lake and play hockey.”

After a quick errand home to grab their hockey sticks and puck, they met at the lake. Amy put her puck in the middle of the frozen lake. They both got on and started to play.

It was a little hard because it was only two people. But it was still fun because they just wanted to play some sports. While in the middle of the game, Josh hit the puck and it went zooming past the goal and into a cave.

The puck went zooming past the goal and into a cave.

“Whoops!” he said. “Now we don’t have a puck!”

Amy and Josh went over to the cave. They heard breathing in the cave. There was a sleeping animal in there. They peeked inside. It was a fox, and it was curled up asleep. The puck was curled up between its legs. If they grabbed the puck, they might wake up the fox.

Then Amy found a large stick. It had two branches on the end, so they could grab something. They just needed some vines. Luckily, there were some vines near the lake. When they tied the vines around between the two branches on the stick, they had some extra vines hanging down so they could pull the sticks in together to grab things.

Amy stood at the front of the cave. She leaned forward with their tool they made and grabbed the puck.

“Hooray!” Amy said when she grabbed it.

“Now we can play!” they said together.

When they turned around, all their friends were out there. They wanted to play hockey now too! The Kids Winter Olympics were starting!

The End

Big Foot in the Garden

Franz Blech was a friendly guy.

Franz Blech was a friendly guy. He was always making friends everywhere he went. He made friends walking down the street, shopping for groceries, and even weeding his garden.

One day, Franz was in his garden, planting flowers when he heard a loud sha-boom! Startled, he turned around, and standing over him was an evil, scary, 20-legged bigfoot! You can imagine how shocked Franz was when it began to talk!

“Greetings,” the bigfoot exclaimed. “My name is Goof and I am from the planet Broccoli. I’m new to earth and am interested in taking over the planet. If you promise to help me, I will allow you to rule over many, many humans and you can eat as many cucumbers as you could possibly desire.”

His dog barked fiercely and growled.

Franz was speechless. What would he say? What would he do? Franz did the only thing he could think to do in the moment. He went on with his routine. First, he swam, then he ran.

Then he said to Goof, “What do you want to do?”

Goof answered, “Why did you go swim and run?”

“So I could get my exercise,” Franz replied.

“Well, I want to take over the world,” Goof continued. “That’s what I want to do.”

Franz finally realized that this was a stranger that wanted to take over the world. Franz did not make a friend this time. He dropped his shovel and picked up his stick. His dog barked fiercely and growled.

Goof put out his hand and Roger ran away into the house.

“Why did you do that?” said Franz. “Why do you want to take over the world anyway? I won’t let you!”

Goof explained that there was a magical crystal hiding in the forest that he was going to use on the people.

That night, when Goof found a place to sleep, Franz took his lantern and his dog and went into the forest. He would find the crystal before Goof did.

As he went into the forest, he bumped into something large. He held his lantern above his head. It was a big box. Franz lifted off the lid. There was the crystal. Now he could stop Goof and he could save the world from Goof!

Sorenson Family Reunion 2019

What happens when you get 14 kids and 10 adults, who all happen to be related, all together for a week? You celebrate a family reunion!

Playing with Cousins

These cousin photos from July show the various stages of play, 2019 style, from preK to tween.

In the preK-ers, we see kids engaging in basic imagination play, using little people toys as little people.
In the early elementary children, we notice them using the toys to build a new more elaborate type of imagination play in a completely new and creative “world”.
In the tweens, notice the complete immersion in phones and tablets, where each is interested in the story or game of the other cousins, and all are comparing the gadgets….
